Located in the capital of Shetland, Jamieson & Smith (Shetland Wool Brokers) Ltd is long established as the islands biggest buyer of the Shetland wool clip - purchasing in excess of 90% of the wool clip.

Farmers and crofters bring their wool clip or have it delivered to our premises situated conveniently adjacent to the main ferry terminal. Individual producer's clips range from 10 kilos up to 6,000 kilos. The wool is then carefully selected into different grades, from the very coarse, almost like hair, used for carpets, interlinings and mattresses to the superb soft handle Shetland used in high quality knitwear. When grading our finest wool, Super Fine, we adhere to the following points:

• Style (crimp), breed characteristics and uniformity of quality
• Strength, springiness and handle (softness)
• Fibre fineness, with high quality Shetland degree of fineness 56s - 60s.

All our wool is then shipped to Bradford where it is processed; further detailed sorting is done before scouring (washing) takes place. Wools are then available to specialist users in the textile trade. A percentage of the finest wool is commission spun for us into high quality knitting yarns. These yarns are supplied to the home user and specialist textile artists world wide, by means of our mail order service.

We also stock 100% Shetland wool tops, in the natural colours, ideal for hand spinners and felt makers.
